Students hone their drawing skills through observational drawing at the beginning of the course. Important developments in 20th-century art, such as cubism, surrealism, and abstraction, are further explored, and students research and create artwork in each of the major styles. Looking at art from many periods and styles will help students develop a style they will explore during the last section of the course.
This Advanced Painting course aims to prepare students to engage in an individual search for meaning and cultural representation through strong visual skills, keen critical reasoning abilities, and an understanding of broad historical and social contexts. This course encourages the freedom and discipline essential to this process by embracing a wide range of aesthetic attitudes and offering flexible themes within the painting and mixed media, along with a place where ideas rooted in the tradition of painting are openly examined and exchanged, challenged, and refined.
